German Wedding Checklist

17 items across 3 categories to plan your German wedding, in the order they come up.

Pre-Wedding Preparation

These are the things to prepare in the months and weeks before the German wedding.

Pre-Wedding
  • Book Standesamt Appointment

Reserve a date at the local registry office for the civil ceremony, which is required by law. Popular dates book months ahead.

  • Gather Legal Documents

Collect your birth certificates, ID documents, proof of residency, and any translations the Standesamt requires.

  • Book Church for Kirchliche Trauung

Reserve a church for the religious ceremony. Meet with the pastor or priest to talk about the service and choose the readings.

  • Book Reception Venue

Reserve a reception venue (Hochzeitslocation) with space for dining, dancing and the outdoor traditions.

  • Order Wedding Rings (Eheringe)

Order your wedding bands (Eheringe). In German tradition the rings are worn on the right hand, so check the sizing for that hand.

  • Plan Polterabend

Organize the pre-wedding smashing party. You will need an outdoor space, food and drinks, and guests need to know to bring old porcelain.

  • Arrange Log Sawing Equipment

Get a decorated log (Baumstamm), a two-handled crosscut saw (Schrotsäge) and a sawhorse for the Baumstamm Sägen.

  • Coordinate Hochzeitszeitung

Friends should start collecting stories, photos and other content for the humorous wedding newspaper well in advance.

Ceremony Day Items

These are the items needed for the wedding day ceremonies and the outdoor traditions.

Ceremony
  • Confirm All Legal Documents Ready

Check that all your documents are complete and accepted by the Standesamt before the ceremony date.

  • Arrange Interpreter if Needed

If either of you is not fluent in German, arrange a certified interpreter for the Standesamt ceremony.

  • Prepare Guard of Honor Items

Ask friends or colleagues to prepare items for the Spalier Stehen archway that reflect your professions or hobbies.

  • Prepare Rice or Petal Bags

Prepare small bags of rice, flower petals or biodegradable confetti for guests to throw after the ceremony.

  • Order Sekt for Reception

Order German sparkling wine for the Sektempfang.

Brautentführung Preparation

This helps you plan the bride kidnapping tradition during the reception.

Reception
  • Identify Nearby Pub

Choose a pub near the reception venue where the bride can be taken.

  • Coordinate Kidnapping Team

Tell the friends who will carry out the kidnapping about the timing, the logistics and the agreed boundaries.

  • Set Pub Tab Budget

Agree on a reasonable budget for the pub tab that the groom will pay on arrival.

  • Set Time Limits

Agree on a window of 30–60 minutes, so the groom is not searching for too long and the evening stays on schedule.
